Bill Ostruske and Donald Murphy started Ostruske-Murphy, Inc., a general contracting company based in Tacoma, Washington that primarily built schools, custom homes, and institutional buildings.
Ostruske-Murphy, Inc. began working on the expanding freeway system in the Pacific Northwest.
Ostruske-Murphy, Inc. became Donald B. Murphy Contractors, Inc. First drilling project was the Pacific Avenue Interchange in Tacoma, Washington. Donald B. Murphy Contractors, Inc. also entered into a joint venture to build the energy plant for the newly constructed Kingdome in Seattle, Washington.
Continued drilling operations, as well as bridge installation throughout the Pacific Northwest. Opened temporary offices in Florida and Utah in response to a real estate and oil boom.
Relocated corporate office from Tacoma to Federal Way, Washington.
Worked on several freeway projects in the Pacific Northwest:
* Seattle, Washington: I-90 West Tunnel Portal
* Mercer Island, Washington: I-90
* Wallace, Idaho: Installed shoring walls for relocation of I-90. Eliminated last stoplight on I-90.
Donald B. Murphy, Inc. acquired a steel bridge erection company, Cooney McHugh Division. Began doing business as DBM-CM.
Continued drilling and shoring operations in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Worked on oil development projects on the North Slope of Alaska. Installed shoring for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Collider in Palo Alto, California.
Late 1980’s – Late 1990’s
The Cooney McHugh Division worked on many dock side cane modifications throughout the world to accommodate the recent increase in cargo ship size.
In addition to drilled shaft and shoring projects, DBM-CM began to implement new foundation and earth retention technologies such as soil nails and micropiles to the Pacific Northwest. The company decided to stop building bridges and other structures, and concentrated only on geotechnical projects.
Current DBM Management was formed.
Dropped Cooney McHugh Division from company name. Began doing business as DBM Contractors, Inc.
Opens SW Washington/Oregon Regional Office in Vancouver, WA.
